Final Evaluation

This academic year has been more difficult from the previous ones in terms of its content and the required quality of work in preparation to our future carriers. However, I prefer this year than the previous ones as the subjects were more related to the desired profession I’m aiming to. I always showed interest in design, especially interior design. Although I had been confused several times in my life to what should I be studying for my future carrier, I ended up choosing the right course. Interior design interior is something that intrigues me because each project consist of different tasks and each project has its individual challenges.  During this year we had the opportunity to design several projects which we were assessed on and I feel that I’m starting to gain a bit of experience and knowledge on what spatial design consist of.

The assignment ‘Critical Thinking’ has helped me further my understanding of being critical. In the beginning of the year, I had small idea of how to be critical, however having this assignment focused on such topic, had further my understanding and knowledge. Meaning that I feel more mature in addressing different situations and know how to look at the negative and positive side of each situation or task. I’m now also more aware on how to argue with someone without having large conflicts. The idea of writing a blog per week was somehow helpful for me as in written and argumentative aspects. However, there is still room for improvement and I’m aiming to further my knowledge during summer while I would have more time to reflect on what could be improved before the final year will resume.

At the beginning of the year I had almost no idea of how a proper debate should be done. During my debate session, I feel that I did well but not excellent. This means that I’m aware that I could improve further. Going to the debate I was a bit nervous and had thoughts that I would do very bad. What I should have avoided is reading out instead of debating instantly. I had prepared very well for my debate and I made a very detailed introduction, then I prepared several counter arguments, so I counter-argued instantly without hesitation. The most part that I struggled the most during the debate was during the question and answer session, where each question needed to be answered instantly with the information prepared. My opponent was also well prepared so the debate was more challenging. During the debate, I was being criticised that my voice projection was bad and most of the audience couldn’t hear everything. This made me realise such weakness, so I will keep this in mind for future presentations and aim to project my voice better and clearer.

Regarding the ‘Critical Thinking’ assignment, one thing that was difficult to identify was the hypothesis for the final essay. The research was quite time consuming and overall, I feel that I discussed and argued most important points of the researched topic. However, as a conclusion I think I should have been more accurate and straight to the point, while I had to clearly mention whether it was approved or not in a better way.

Regarding the dissertation, I feel a bit more comfortable about it now, as till few months ago I had little idea what the dissertation consists of. I should say that the new course is much better now than the previous BTEC course which hadn’t any assignment that aims to prepare for the thesis. So, an assignment which was called ‘Critical Studies and Research Methods’ which was assigned for the first semester of this academic year, was aimed to prepare us for the dissertation next year. Thanks to this I managed to choose a hypothesis and now I have some knowledge on the subject I wish to do the dissertation about.

Overall this academic year had been great and I learned from different experiences and tasks which helped me mature more as a person. From now on I will start dedicating some time in preparation for the dissertation as I’m aware that it’s going to be a very challenging year which needs lots of dedication and good time management.

Essay Plan

Currently, I’m in the process of drafting the final essay for Task 3. The research will be sourced form online and I’m using reliable sources for best information available.

The introduction is going to be a summary of what will be discussed in the essay and a short introduction on the topic chosen.

Then the main body of the essay will be constructed by different subtitles that cover different arguments. To strengthen the arguments the essay will discuss negative and positive arguments regarding my topic which is about public libraries. Disadvantages and advantages will also be mentioned, regarding the use of libraries within the society specifically in Malta.

Finding different statistics will proof the argument valid and these will be included and further discussed in more detail. It will mainly discuss main issues regarding public libraries in Malta. It will also discuss different users and target audiences.

With this essay, I want to find out if it’s a valid topic to be researched on as to my concern libraries are becoming controversial as these are nowadays being demised. One important factor that are acting against the popularity of libraries is technology. This factor will also be further discussed within the essay as to further understand what would be of an alternative to public libraries or what would increase the interest amongst people.

Improving the Hypothesis Title

Hypothesis title: Creating literate environments for various activities to encourage people to read more, by targeting all age groups.

As a recap from last blog, my hypothesis is about finding a solution to a better environment to literate environments. Although I know the type of hypothesis I’m aiming to research next year for my final dissertation, there is still room for improvement to a better hypothesis with stronger arguments.
After I identified my hypothesis, one thing that might still be worrying me is finding a location, where it is preferably located centrally and large enough to accommodate most of my intended activities for a literate environment for the public.

At the very beginning my initial idea was to create an outdoor/mobile environment for a library space, which will encourage more people in reading. However, I discarded the idea after some discussions with lecturers, as they argued that it still won’t be effective and would be difficult to build arguments about, which I also agreed. From this idea, I wanted to still implement an outdoor space incorporated with the same area as an extension to it, with the intentions to have an area to attract more people which will also serve as a relaxation area for reading.

So, in my final assay I will be discussing possible activities that could be done in one space supported by valid arguments. At this stage, I’m researching and drafting the first part of the assay, in order to further develop and improve it from time to time later on.

Discussing My Hypothesis

First, I would like to start off by discussing the fact that I skipped two weeks of writing blogs. This was because of the pressure of having many deadlines. These deadlines were so tense for me to keep up with writing blogs. During the past two weeks, I have not slept enough as I spent most of the nights working on the upcoming deadlines. Writing this blog is also difficult for me to spare time for it. This is because more deadlines are coming and more pressure is coming up in the coming weeks as all assignments have close deadlines and it’s going to be hard to manage all assignments simultaneously.

Furthermore, my hypothesis is now decided and was discussed and confirmed with the tutor. The hypothesis is about improving literate environments such as public libraries in Malta. My idea about this is to improve the layout of public libraries in Malta. This is since most of the layouts in Malta are boring and has no activities going on, apart from having a library for the sake of lending books. My way forward and possible solution is to have a space that provides different activities for different age groups. I would like to see the idea of reading off a book back again. Also, having a space that has an innovative system of borrowing books, which will lead to increase the use of physical book. Adapting a space for a library is needed and till now we do not have improvements in government systems.

The Hypothesis

At the moment, I’m finding myself confused on what my hypothesis should be really about. It’s a bit challenging to determine a specific topic to have strong arguments. Having lots of assignments’ work to do, and many deadlines are coming up, makes it difficult for me to think about such important thing.

Posting a blog per week helps me keep myself updated and improve my critical thinking. However sometimes I find it difficult to write a blog as it’s almost impossible to find the time to do so. To be honest, sometimes I couldn’t find the right words to express what’s in my mind and that also effect my writing quality in my blogs.

Moreover, the topic of my hypothesis will probably be related to the library. As already mentioned in previous blogs, libraries are being overlooked nowadays especially in Malta. People seems to avoid using the library nowadays as they are preferring to use technology which inevitably is taking over books. From own observations, Malta’s public libraries seem to be put aside when it comes to maintenance and book updates. I’m also finding different case studies to let myself explore what’s already in existence and what are the real needs related with the education of the public. One of the main things I would like to find out with my research is to create a project that encourages people to read, aiming also for children of a very young age, as to have them develop a habit of reading.

In order to achieve and brainstorm the topic of my hypothesis for my dissertation, I’m also trying to have meetings with different lecturers to have different opinions and ideas about the hypothesis.

The Dissertation Title

Although I already determined the title of the dissertation as it was a requirement for a particular assignment last semester, I still feel confused about this title. I feel that the title needs improvement as it might not be fully clear on what my research will actually be based on.

From now on I will be working and considering changing the title to be clearer. To do so, I’m considering lecturers’ advices. So, I’m trying to ask lecturers to help me out construct a better title. The next important thing I need to do is to submit a paper where I will be explaining my final title and area of study. This needs to be submitted by the end of May so that it will be verified by administrative persons, if I’m not mistaken.

Having had an assignment during the first semester, that gave us an insight about the structure and what a dissertation requires, made me feel a bit prepared for next year. I’m sure that next year will be a very tense year, where we need to work on the required assignments along with the dissertation. Personally, thinking about it makes me feel stressed and anxious, but then knowing that I have from now on to start preparing and having all the learning outcomes achieved by then, (during this academic year) it will hopefully prepare me for such project.

I think looking at others’ dissertations will also help me understand better the quality of work required. I still need to do this task, as I hope it will help me further understand the requirements.

Mdina Ditch

For the research of the “Landscape Design” unit, I had to select and find about a local landscape design. I chose the Mdina Ditch project since it’s the closest one to my house and overall I like the project a lot. A while ago, when I used to have some spare time during the evenings, I used to go for a walk passing through the ditch enjoying the surroundings. At that point I never noticed or observed the space very well. But now doing the research for this task made observe certain things that normally are taken for granted by users.

To complete this task, I went to visit the ditch several times in order to take images and do some observations. I went there at different times of the day and the evening as to observe well how it’s being used by people.
Mdina Ditch - Before - Source Unkown

During the week in the evenings the ditch is mostly used by people who loves walking or jogging, during the day from morning to evening it is mostly used by tourists and during the weekend it is mostly used by families. During the night, the ditch is closed but could only be appreciated from above, from the Howard gardens.

About the Ditch
The Mdina ditch serves as a buffer zone from Rabat and Mdina, where the bastions start. It is an area where rain water used to be collected in reservoirs during the knights’ era.

Before the project was done, it was a completely abandoned area from the authorities. It used to serve as a parking area, sports pitch and filled with citrus trees. But around the 2012 they started to come up with ideas to make the space useful and aesthetically pleasing. The concept behind this project was to create a space to be enjoyed by families, so it had to be designed as a safe environment where people would relax and rest their minds while enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. They also wanted to implement an original idea and function when the ditch used to serve as to collect rain water into a reservoir at the Vilhena palace in Mdina. The new project was then finished in 2013.
In order to do this project most citrus trees were relocated in a more organized manner, following the chosen design idea. The trees were replaced following the linear paths created, making room for full visibility to the bastions which should be fully appreciated by visitors, as they are an important feature of Mdina which forms part of the Maltese history.

The new design of the Mdina is very linear, parallel with the surrounding walls. Overall the area is very quiet as it is situated in a lower level of the surroundings. The surrounding walls and bastions serves to block the noise. On the opposite side of the bastions there is the well-known Howard garden which serves as a buffer zone from the noise of a busy street adjacent to it. The Ditch has various seating areas, situated where there are the most interesting features around.

During night time, the bastions are brightly lit by large flood-lights, which then the bright light on the bastions, reflects back on darker areas, creating a focal point of admiration on the bastions. The lighting bollards are placed along the paths to give a sense of direction which acts as a guide to pedestrians. Lamps are used for seating areas, which makes it adaptive for seating purposes. Both lighting bollards and lamps has symmetrical distribution. The overall lighting is bright white, however least popular areas have warm yellowish light, creating a sense of relaxation and a contrast from the rest of the space, showing the different zones within the space.

The ditch nowadays is still in good condition, but lacks maintenance especially of lighting. During evening hours the broken lighting fixtures create dark areas, which blocks the user from appreciating certain features of the place during that time of the day.

Library Design - Case Study (Dissertation)

Arch Daily, 2013.
A case study that can relate to my intended dissertation is the Subterranean Tunnel Links Library, designed by JKMM Architects, which was initially designed by Alvar Aalto in 1965. The main building is known to be a “masterpiece of modern architecture and a highly valuable cultural environment”, therefore known for its uniqueness of its characteristics.

The new project wanted to redesign the existing library in a contemporary style that attracts various age groups (Frearson, A. 2014). The new project design expanded the original area as to increase the area and incorporate additional reading rooms mainly to meet today’s needs (Frearson, A. 2014). The design was quite challenging especially to be able to create a balance between the old and the new building keeping the same characteristics design by Aalto (JKMM Architects, 2013).
One of the aims the new design proposed is to create a connection between the new and old part of the building by respecting the original characteristics (JKMM Architects, 2013).

Arch Daily, 2013.

Nowadays technology is rapidly changing and developing, and this project aims to provide adaptive technologies in relation to the library, aiming to draw attention of different individuals towards the library (JKMM Architects, 2013). Creating new roles to the new library by creating various zones within this library for various activities. The zones were sectioned in three which were distinguished by the different use of form, textures and materials from one zone to the other (JKMM Architects, 2013). One zone was created as a relaxing area where various activities related with the library can happen, then stairs leads users towards the shelving area were most of the books are held, also leading to a subterranean passage that leads to the older part of the building (JKMM Architects, 2013). A sculpture like elements was incorporate throughout most parts of the interior. From the interior beautiful panoramic view are achieved with no obstruction, creating a connection of the exterior into the interior (JKMM Architects, 2013).

Dezeen, 2014.
The whole building itself stands out and contrasts from the rest as its exterior has a darker material from the rest of the buildings at the surroundings. The materials used for the exterior were dark copper cladding, which forms a unique and eye-catching texture (JKMM Architects, 2013).

Arch Daily, 2013.

Having analysed this case study, I really think that this case study is interesting and I’m realising that we tend to overlook the need of libraries in Malta and do not invest in such buildings which can aim to enrich everyone’s knowledge. If something similar is done in Malta, I personally think that it would draws children’s and parents’ attention, and they’d invest more of their time in literacy. This case study shows an insight of what I would like my dissertation project to be based on, but of course having the research to determine the aims and objectives to design a local public library.

Group Work

This semester for most of the units, we need to work in groups. Working in groups isn’t always easy and there are various advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I think that having four units that needs to be done in groups during one semester are a lot, because certain tasks get me confused at times as to understand and refresh my memory about with whom I’m working with what.

Groupworks acts as a learning journey, as one will understand how to work hand in hand with others, which I believe that in our area of study it will be useful in the future. This experience of working with others is helping me to let others show their opinions and ideas. We are also learning from each other different methods and understandings. Sometimes working alone, might lead you to think through one point of view. However, sometimes I prefer to work on my own as I feel that I have full control on all my work and don’t need to rely on someone else.

Through these experiences, I’m still learning to work in groups and that working in large group of people isn’t easy as it’s more difficult to have group meeting and to have full agreement by all members, thus leading to numerous arguments. Having arguments in a group is sometimes healthy, although it depends on the quality of the arguments. Sometimes arguments lead to unwanted negativity or misunderstandings, which may result in a bad outcome. Moreover, to have a healthy team of people, there needs to be people having different perspectives and having different people having different knowledge from every aspect of the topic.

Although working with close friends is more comfortable, it is good to work with new people as this prepare us to our future career where we need to meet new people and work with them, whether you like them or not.

Currently having gone through a difficult moment in my life recently, I felt that starting to work with other people started to get me nervous and anxious resulting in less concentration on work. Well, from my impression some people don’t seem to understand what my situation is and I don’t blame them or need them to feel sorry for me, none of that but sometimes some people do not respect that other people might be hurt in their personal life. Personally, I’m not one to feel offended very often, but at the moment I’m trying to recover from a heartbreak which needs some time to heal so that I can get back on my feet. Moreover, I’m still doing the best I could and I’m determined to get good grades and work well as a team member so that we all get good grades. Through this experience, I’m learning to stay calm and have patience.

Preparing for the Dissertation Project

The dissertation project require a lot of work and in depth research to be done. This week we had a meeting about what we need to fill out so that we can start the dissertation next year. But a lot of preparations needs to be done before we actually conduct the dissertation.

At this stage I feel that I have a good idea now of what the dissertation project requires as we already had an assignment unit based on that. This unit was as an introduction to the dissertation and we had to find out a topic which interests us, but can be changed next year. As a requirement to this unit we had to find and read from different sources to formulate a bibliography list. Then the proposal form and its presentation and then the literature review and its presentation. These were only a requirement for this unit as to reach the given criteria, with the aim that we get knowledge about how to start the dissertation. Although we created our own title for the unit, everything can be changed or refined till next year. In my opinion this unit helped me more to understand certain requirements that are very important to the dissertation.

Moreover, I still feel uncertain about my chosen title as there might be room for improving the title as I think, it could be more specific to what I intend to research about. My topic will be related to interior design specifically on public libraries. I still need to develop realistic and better arguments about the title. Doing more research during next summer should help me be prepared to develop arguments. Furthermore, we need to fill the ‘Statement of Intent’ form again and although I already did one during the unit mentioned earlier, I don’t feel confident filling the real one, as I’m not certain if I’m doing it right and I’m still waiting for the marks and feedback of that unit, which I hope that I did well and if not, I’m hoping for a good feedback of what I did wrong so I could improve upon.

As mentioned earlier, the meeting we had this week, was to inform us that we need to fill a form about who I would prefer as my supervisor, based on their area of knowledge. I already have in mind who I will be listing in my preference list.

Debates

During this week’s lecture, we had to debate about the controversial tunnel that is being proposed between Malta and Gozo. I was chosen with the in-favour group and another group were against. So, we started researching as a group from our devices to find the best arguments possible to attack the opponent and also to formulate good arguments to defend our side. In my opinion, it was a very interesting topic to debate on, and last week's topic, was on the flood relief project in Malta, which it wasn't a really interesting subject to have good arguments on.

These exercises (debates) have been happening for the last weeks to help us understand the real purpose of a debate. Debates for me are quite a difficult task to do and I think that such exercises during the lecture will help me out understand what and how to actually do debates and put us on the right track. My main difficulty is that I’m a very shy person and talking in front of a number of people with their full attention towards me gets me nervous and I usually feel very uncomfortable in such situations. I believe that having great arguments won’t do magic in debates, I think that having an outgoing and a confident personality is much important as to convince the opponent, which I feel that such thing might get against me in debates.

Something that I’m not that sure and still need to get used to is how a debate is build up. If I recall correctly firstly, the first round starts by a five-minute introduction, then the opponent another five. Then only one group gets a five-minute round to ask multiple questions to the other group. This round needs to be done by quick questions from one group and the opponent needs to just answer. Then the debate continues by five-minute each group one after the other, answering, defending and attacking the previous arguments being mentioned in the same debate. Things that needs to be avoided during debates are the tendency to interrupt each other and that we let our emotions talk rather than the real arguments themselves.

Are Libraries Being Overlooked Nowadays? (Dissertation)

It is a fact that libraries are losing popularity and they’re not being used as much. I did some research from the National Statistics Office of Malta’s website, where I found the real statistics of how much libraries in Malta are being used along the past years.

According to the National Statistics Office – Malta (NSO) in 2013 the number of book loans from public libraries in Malta were lower than the previous year by 9.5 % (Ellul, N., 2014). In 2014, loans were also lower by 17.3% from the previous year (Galea, J., 2016), however during the year of 2015 the number of book loans increased by 22.5% from the previous year (Caruana, E., 2015).  These statistics are accurate ones and one would notice that libraries are not being used as much from time to time. For instance, taking the number of book loans during the year 2015 which is a total of 777,804 compared with 2012 which had a total of 848,167 book loans (Galea, J., 2016) (Caruana, E., 2015) (Ellul, N., 2014). That is a considerable decreasing amount, which can be worrying towards the use of libraries in the future.

Not only in Malta, the use of library is decreasing but also in England, which is a worrying fact that needs to be taken care and action upon, before libraries are forever gone (Flood, A., 2014). Another issue is that very few people are choosing the role as a librarian (Flood, A., 2014).

One of the reasons that libraries are being overlooked is because of the new technologies, which are somehow taking over. Technology such as eBooks are sometimes being preferred over books as they have some advantages over the use of a book (Abram, S., 2010). EBooks can be very useful to people who are visually impaired as they have the option to let the device read aloud the text for them (Abram, S., 2010). This provides an easy opportunity towards such users, who are usually in the minority. EBooks has multiple other advantages such as, having the option to change the font size or type easily, dictionary function, etc. (Abram, S., 2010). Moreover, it can hold thousands of books in just one device, which allows the user to easily browse their preferred book in just few clicks (Abram, S., 2010). On the other hand, printed books will provide a user experience, by its smell and feel which enhance the user’s memory according to the article ‘P-Books vs. Ebooks: Are There Education Issues?’ by Abram, Stephen. While printed books can be long lasting and can be borrowed, although risks passing germs from one person to the other (Abram, S., 2010).

The Importance of Reading Education in Relation to the Library. (Dissertation)

This blog is going to discuss few arguments related with my dissertation title which is, "Discovering Innovative Ways to Design a Local Public Library".

A research article named ‘Sharing resources - how library networks can help reach education goals’ written by Ruth Makotsi, argues about reading education within southern countries such as in Africa where people are very poor. It argues that in order to have well literate and educated people, it is to the utmost importance that they read, but to read they actually need reading materials (Makorsi, R., 2005). Reading is a very powerful tool to be invested in people to help them get knowledgeable, “broaden horizons and think independently and critically” (Makorsi, R., 2005). Promoting literacy is very essential to such countries, at the same time it is also important to other countries. Libraries could be a great way to promoting reading by providing updated reading material regularly. This article emphasizes on the impact of reading culture in southern countries, how it would improve their expansion in education therefore this would result in a better economy. “Libraries can provide information about all sorts of issues which can help alleviate poverty, and act as a focal point for the community” (Makorsi, R., 2005).

The article ‘The Role of Libraries in the Creation of Literate Environments’ by Lisa Krolak has similar arguments to the previous article mentioned ‘Sharing resources - how library networks can help reach education goals’. It is very important that environments such as libraries are well maintained, as this might encourage people to continue flourish their literacy skills by going to libraries more often (Krolak, L., 2005). On the other hand ‘The Role of Libraries in the Creation of Literate Environments’ argues that in order to have basic interest amongst people, basic education needs to start at home as parents should also be educated enough to encourage their children to read and make use of available reading material (Krolak, L., 2005).  According to the same article mentioned in this paragraph, children who are brought up in literate environments are more to succeed rather than those who are not. Schools are mostly beneficial to promote reading to children. It also argues that on the other hand, children today might get easily distracted by having more than enough easy access to technology such as televisions, computers, etc. which these eventually acts against reading education. Such technologies are also providing enough fun to children and they are distracted from reading for fun (Krolak, L., 2005). It also argues that libraries worldwide are not well funded and has low budget allocated to libraries individually. Due to this, libraries can be effected negatively 4 towards its service and in its provided materials including books, furniture, computers, DVD/Cds, etc. which are most to require funds (Krolak, L., 2005).  These things are important to be kept in safe and dry place, where there’s no excessive humidity (Krolak, L., 2005). It’s also important the place is safe from theft by having installed the necessary equipment/tools to act against theft (Krolak, L., 2005).

In contrast to the previous articles mentioned, where they mention the importance of the library towards society, the article ‘Architectural Design Education: Designing a Library, Public Communication and Information Center in the Manufacturing Zone of Central Eskisehir Turkey, a Case Study’, argues that libraries aren’t important anymore and that “it is a fact that their [libraries] golden age has past due to contemporary reproduction and copying possibilities”, and that the internet is taking over the main role of the library (Caglar, N., Uludag, Z., 2006). Libraries are just places where people just sit and read together in public, according to this article. It adds that “libraries will survive for the sake of the attractiveness of the ritual of reading together in public that it serves.” (Caglar, N., Uludag, Z., 2006).

Goodbyes are hard

Although this is a bit of a personal blog, it’s a must for me to mention such event in my life, as this is currently effecting my studies' performance.

This week didn’t start very well for me, as my dearest grandma sadly passed away. This week was actually the toughest and most difficult in my entire life. Last Sunday I had the last opportunity to visit my grandma at hospital for the very last time and that day she was in a very critical condition and unconscious. That day, before I was leaving, I told her goodbye and that I will come visit the next day… although she was unconscious she heard me as she slightly opened her eyes and nodded to my words. She looked like she wanted to tell me something but unfortunately, she didn’t have enough strength.

The following morning, I woke up to the worst news in my life that she had just passed away. To this I cried my eyes out, knowing that I will not see her ever again. At the same time knowing that she will be in better place and resting forever. Although, till today I haven't accepted this fact and I'm still pretending her to appear somewhere as my mind keeps thinking that's impossible that she's gone forever.

Me and my family will be missing her more than the rest of the family as she was living with us and she was a huge part of my life and now I feel part of me is missing. During this week me and my family are experiencing grief, and for me and my brothers, it’s the first time that we lost someone who was very close to us.

Well, reflecting back in time during when she was alive, I could say that I don’t have much disappointments or regrets concerning her because I always tried my best to please her and keep her happy, although we had arguments, but that’s normal. What I could say that I learned from this experience is that you have to live your life to the full, and appreciate more the moments with loved ones as we don’t know what the future might lead us into. I’m also glad that I had her in my life as she taught me a lot and I will be following her steps.

As mentioned earlier, this event is effecting my studies as I’m not fully concentrated and I’m mentally tired and drained. So this week I missed all lessons and had to ask for an extension regarding only one assignment. The lecturer concerned understood the situation and granted approval for the extension. For the other assignments, the work had to be done in groups and my part was almost done till last Sunday. The group members also seemed to understand my situation and were fine to continue the last parts of the work on their own. I also spoke with the lecturers concerned and they also understood the situation.

With the aim to moving on, I will try to do my best and start attending lectures as from next semester. During the progress week I will try to work on the remaining assignment, to be on time and try to make my grandma proud.

Schön’s Reflective Model

The term Schön’s reflective model was invented by Donald Schön. This is a particular style of reflection in two different approached which actually both lead to the other forming a cycle (as shown in the diagram). The reflection is to be ‘in-action’ and ‘on-action’.

Reflection on-action is when you reflect on what had happened and what could have been done better. Reflection in-action is when you reflect in the present, during the action, when you act quickly on something that is happening.

The Schön’s reflective model is normally used by everyone unintentionally when writing about something that had happened and you’d reflect on what you could have done and what would you do the next time during a particular action (Solent Online Learning, n.d.).

In the following text I will be putting the Schön’s reflective model into practice.

Questionnaires

As part of an assignment, we need to work in a group of three with the aim to finally design the Art Studio 1, and currently we’re doing research methods. In order to do this we had to plan ahead when we’ll be doing what, and this week we had to conduct questionnaires, which we had already drafted previously. The questionnaires are aimed to collect different views and perspectives of students and lecturers, who use Art Studio 1. Me and my team member started to hand these questionnaires to students who were using the space during their lecture in charge to fill them out. A particular class, were struggling to fill the form as they didn’t understand few questions and they started to fill them out quickly to get them done.

So after this we realized that the questionnaires could have been structured better. The questions should have been more focused in multiple choice, as we included some open ended questions and sometimes, the answers were being written in short or left empty.

There was also a question where we included four images of different classroom interiors and the question being asked was to make a choice of the image they’d prefer, taking into consideration the lighting and colours only demonstrated in the images. Few participants where choosing a particular image just because they like the room setting and not the lighting and colour. The problem was that the question was being misunderstood and that the question wasn’t straight to the point and it might have been too long to read for a questionnaire.

So reflecting on this particular event, I think I would be structuring a better questionnaire by making it shorter, straighter to the point and simpler. This would put the participant at ease as they’d fill it out in more precise and quicker way.

Tough week...

This week was one of my toughest weeks in my entire life. My dearest grandma had to be admitted to the hospital and the next day after she was there, her health became worse and some complications had emerged, leaving us all in shock and disbelief. At first I thought she would have a smooth recovery as she’s a very tough person but now I’m confused. At this very difficult moment I’m really drained and worried and I don’t really have much energy and concentration to do the assignments or attend to lessons. In fact I missed the last two days of lessons this week. I’m spending most of the time possible at hospital with family next to my grandma keeping her company and taking care of her.

She is like my second mother to me, she is a person who helped raising me and my brothers along with my parents, in the best way possible. And if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be the person who I am today. She taught me how to respect people, to love, to be honest, to have courage, to stay positive and many other things. To that I feel the need to respect her back and repay few of the sacrifices she’d done with us and I want to spend the most time possible with her now during this difficult moment. I hope she will feel better because I hate watching her suffer and I want her back home with us again.

As I said before, during this difficult moment, I’m really finding it hard to continue with my studies, but I’m trying to do the best I can to spend few hours working on assignments. For most assignments, we are working in groups and I’m still keeping contact with my group members to understand what they’re doing and giving me updates to what is happening during lessons. At the same time I feel frustrated that I couldn’t give my full performance. I also spoke with some lecturers explaining everything and they understood my situation. I’m also glad that I had made the best I could previously so I have a good amount of work ready, but still have much more to do and the deadlines are very close!

The Controversial High-Rise Buildings in Malta.

The high-rise buildings topic in Malta has lately been into large controversies. At the moment some high-rise buildings are being proposed and some of them are being approved. The controversies has recently started after few buildings were being approved. They are known to be effecting some citizen’s quality life and such other negative aspects towards citizens (Times of Malta, 2016). The buildings can eventually cause an increase in traffic which currently the traffic situation is a bit disastrous(Times of Malta, 2016). There might also be an increase of parking problems, if the problem is not addressed well, as such building should have their own parking malls, which I assume they will as I don’t have enough knowledge about their regulations and permits.

The idea of high-rise building in Malta compared with other countries is very different, as Malta is a small island which in my opinion there isn’t the need of such buildings. I think that such large buildings, will cause lots of problems to the Maltese citizens as already mentioned. Malta has always had some sort of identity in buildings and large buildings doesn’t fall under that and I wouldn’t want them in our skyline as they’d ruin such unique skyline and views by these buildings which will look like a giant block of concrete emerging out of the ground. Well, I’m not totally against the idea behind their purpose because I’m aware that such investments would increase our economy, my concern is more about the buildings themselves as they are very long and will surely have negative impact on people’s lives (Debono, J. 2015). If there is no solution other than building such buildings, then I would accept them to be built away from central areas, so they won’t be visible from everywhere in Malta. For instance I don’t agree with the fact that they’d be built in Mriehel as they’re currently proposed. (Times of Malta, 2016). As for example the Portomaso tower is alongside the sea within the bulk of buildings in St. Julian’s, which makes it almost blend in that particular area, although it’s still very high and could be visible from long distances in Malta, but it’s not blocking most views.

Imagine if suddenly close to your neighbourhood, a long tower is approved to be built, and by this you know that the most of the sunlight is going to be covered and that maybe a view you used to enjoy is now blocked and all you can see is just building… I don’t think that I would agree with such building because it has such negative aspects including the decreasing property value of my property.  Such things are probably being ignored and people suffering such negative aspects are being in the minority and probably won’t be recognized by authorities. Other negative aspect that towers might have, is that when the winds are strong, pedestrians walking by, might get hurt as the wind forces will change their direction causing stronger and dangerous winds (Debono, J. 2015).
